Changes of pilgrimage road along Barkhor Street in Lhasa

  Streams of pilgrims circumambulate

the Jokhang Temple in Barkhor Street.

It has long been regarded as the most unique culture

in the holy city of Lhasa.

Over thousands of years, what has changed in the pilgrimage road?

  Welcome to "Wow! Tibet."

Now we are standing in the most famous

  Barkhor Street in Lhasa.

  Since the establishment

of the Jokhang Temple in the 7th century,

Tibetan Buddhists have been praying around the temple,

and gradually formed this one-kilometer-long prayer road.

Today, it not only retains a strong ethnic look,

but also is a prosperous commercial center

and a must-visit place for tourists around the world.

However, local seniors tell us that in the past,

the pilgrimage road here was a narrow dirt road.

Whenever it rained, the road would be muddy and slippery,

and the vendors on both sides made the situation even worse.

Since 1951, Barkhor Street has undergone several repairs,

and the pavement has evolved into today's slabstones.

In the latest renovation 8 years ago,

the government chose the eye-friendly slabstone for the comfort of the pilgrims,

even though it costed much more.

  Locals said,

the current pavement is solid, beautiful and humane,

Vendors have moved into the mall

so the community sanitation has improved a lot.

  When the sunlight is intense,

people who feel tired can sit on special seats under the tree for a casual talk and rest.

  身体疲惫时,人们可以坐在树下特设的座椅上休息与闲谈;

  At night,

  Tibetan streetlight,

designed based on the look of prayer wheel,

  lights up the pilgrimage road.

So, how do you feel about all these changes?

The smiling faces of the locals will tell you.

  I’m Xing Yi in Lhasa,

thanks for watching, see you next time.
